Capabilities of SIS

Scientific Instrument Services has been in the business of manufacturing  parts for scientific instruments for more than 25 years.  All of our experience in the manufacture of scientific instruments and accessories combined with the latest in manufacturing equipment results in precision machined components and assemblies made right the first time and every time.  We take pride in our work and are committed to superior craftsmanship, on time delivery, and attention to the finest details.

Scientific Instrument Services, Inc. specializes in parts and services for mass spectrometers, gas chromatographs and related analytical instruments. Our filament repair and manufacture shops, machine shops, welding shops and general instrument repair and manufacture facilites continue to expand both in size and capabilities. Our facilities were begun to serve the scientific instrument market as a repair service center for these instrument parts. We now also manufacture custom instrument parts for end users as well as OEM's. In the last few years we have expanded even further to scientific equipment design and manufacture. Examples of these include the Short Path Thermal Desorption System and GC Cryo-Trap both of which were designed and are manufactured by SIS. We also now offer these same design and manufacturing capabilities to both end users and to OEM's. We offer complete engineering and design assistance as well as manufacturing facilities. We have over ten years involvement in the design of filaments for mass spectrometers and a wide range of experience in vacuum systems and gas chromatography. This experience in the scientific field combined with our machining knowledge and capabilities enables us to design for maximum production efficiency and excellent part performance. Our computer aided design (CAD) system from CADKEY is a state-of-the-art 3D design package. This CAD system is completely tied to a computer aided manufacturing (CAM).. The CAM system links our design capabilities to our computer controlled machine tools to maximize efficiency. A design can quickly be translated into actual tool movement for either a mill or lathe.

Utilizing the knowledge and experience gained from repairing thousands of filaments from a wide variety of manufacturers and models of instruments, SIS began to design and redesign filaments for mass spectrometers about 10 years ago. We learned from the various types of filaments we repaired, which designs worked best and what could be done to increase filament life and performance. Our goal in producing new filaments is to improve the design, increase filament life, reduce the cost and improve the filament and mass spectrometer performance.

We presently manufacture filaments and heaters for more than 25 models of mass spectrometers and related equipment. In addition we custom manufacture filaments on an exclusive OEM basis for several instrument companies. If you have a need for a custom design filament, SIS can help you with the design and can manufacture the filament for you. Sample Vials/Glass Liners/Jet Separators

S.I.S. manufactures a wide range of sizes and styles of sample vials for mass spectrometers. Our most popular styles are the flared vials for the Finnigan MAT instruments. A variety of specialized custom designed equipment is utilized to cut, flare, and seal these sample vials. Jet Separators for GC/MS systems can also be repaired.

Each vial is hand flared in a lathe and the bottom is then sealed to produce the vials shown above right

Injection port liners are also manufactured by S.I.S. out of glass and quartz for various models of gas chromatographs.

Gold and Platinum Gasket Fabrication

SIS can fabricate pure gold or platinum gaskets to your specifications.  These gaskets are often used in high vacuum or high pressure environments where a good seal is required that can also be subjected to elevated temperatures.  These gaskets are often used in mass spectrometers and other high vacuum scientific instruments.

S.I.S. also manufactures a wide variety of parts and assemblies. These parts include Mass Spectrometer Probes, Transfer Lines, Flanges, Filaments, Gaskets, Thermocouples and Heaters.
